HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of San Antonio Presents Resilient Heroes Award

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of San Antonio (RIOSA) will recognize Esperanza “Hopie” Lopez as the recipient of the Resilient Heroes Award on Friday, March 13 at noon. Hopie will share the story of her road to recovery post traumatic brain injury at the ceremonial event taking place at HealthSouth RIOSA.

Hopie’s journey began on Feb. 22, 2014 when she was involved in a head-on collision motor vehicle accident. Her injuries were severe- she was intubated at the scene and taken to a hospital in Tyler, Texas, where her mother was told she might not live through the night. Hopie had suffered multiple injuries and was comatose for six weeks. In May 2014 she was transferred to a skilled nursing facility in San Antonio and had gained some speech ability, but was unable to do any self-care. In August 2014 Hopie discovered to HealthSouth RIOSA through the Department of Rehabilitation Services and began the acute rehabilitation program for brain injury. With the goal of transitioning back into the community, Hopie started the transitional living program for post-acute brain injury in November 2014. Now, Hopie is driven by her personal goals of getting her life back to normal and being able to take care of her three children.

“Hopie’s stay and outcomes at HealthSouth RIOSA has improved her life 100 percent,” said Felicia Ramirez, mother of Hopie. “She no longer is just lying in bed; she is more communicative with me and the staff. The staff  has done an amazing job and I would recommend HealthSouth in a heartbeat.”

“Hopie was completely dependent when she arrived at HealthSouth RIOSA,” said Rolando Salinas, OT, therapy supervisor. “She has made progress at HealthSouth RIOSA that has helped her return to a level of function which allows her to perform her own daily activities. Her three major accomplishments include her being able to dress herself, sit unsupported, and being able to recall everyday things.”
