HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of San Antonio Presents Resilient Heroes Award
HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of San Antonio (RIOSA) will recognize Jonathan Savage as the recipient of the Resilient Heroes Award on Friday, July 8. Hear the inspiring story of his road of recovery at this annual event which takes place in the hospital’s Independence Cafe at noon.
While the senior year of high school is an exciting time for students preparing to become independent and take on new challenges in adulthood, Jonathan’s independence was ripped away after a motorcycle wreck that occurred on Sept. 2, 2015 in Laredo. He was in a coma for 11 days and suffered a thoracic spine and brain injury due to the impact of hitting a retaining wall which left him completely paralyzed.
At RIOSA, Jonathan worked with physical and occupational therapists in order to regain independence and learn how to walk and perform basic daily activities again. While he is not walking completely unassisted yet, his determination got him as far as using canes to walk across the stage at his high school graduation. Despite therapy and other medical needs taking up the majority of his time during the recovery period, he completed his schoolwork in the hospital so that he could graduate with his class.
“Our staff is incredibly proud of Jonathan for his many accomplishments and the positive attitude and determination he has kept throughout his recovery,” said Scott Butcher, CEO of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of San Antonio. “We are extremely proud to honor him with our annual Resilient Heroes Award. His hard work has and will continue to pay off.”
To celebrate his accomplishments, first responders from his wreck, his treatment team from University Hospital in San Antonio and counselors from the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services are expected to be in attendance.
