HealthSouth RIOSA Honors Amputee Patient with Resilient Heroes Award

On April 28 at noon, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of San Antonio (RIOSA) will recognize Gayle Fisk, a recent amputee patient of the hospital, as a recipient of the Resilient Heroes Award. Her inspiring story of recovery will be shared at this annual event which will take place in the hospital’s Independence Café located at 9119 Cinnamon Hill Dr. in San Antonio.

Fisk, an avid golfer and traveler, started feeling ill upon returning from a weeklong vacation with her husband at a state park on Oct. 31, 2016. Within 48 hours after her return, she was admitted to the intensive care unit and placed in a drug-induced coma. It was discovered her illness was a result of an E. coli bacterial infection in her kidneys, which can be fatal in certain forms as it can cause kidney failure or anemia. To keep the infection from spreading, she underwent above-the-knee amputations to both of her legs, an amputation at the elbow to her left arm, and amputations to some of the fingers on her right hand.

At HealthSouth RIOSA, Fisk worked with physical and occupational therapists to regain independence by learning how to use her new prosthetic arm and legs. When using a prosthetic device for the first time, therapists work with patients on regaining balance, strengthening and retraining muscles for movement, and educating the patient on safety and wound care. All of these skills will also come into play as the therapy team helps her back to the game of golf.

“Patients come to us to regain independence, but we learn much from them as well. Gayle has inspired us and taught us about staying positive and determined when faced with adversity. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments and know she’ll achieve all goals she sets her mind to,” said Michael Thomas, CEO of HealthSouth RIOSA. “It is our honor to present her with our annual Resilient Heroes Award.”

According to the Amputee Coalition, approximately 185,000 amputations occur in the United States each year and are a result of a variety of illnesses or injuries. During April, hospitals across the country team up to observe Limb Loss Awareness Month and celebrate the many inspiring patients that they have helped get back into motion after limb loss.
